Wahnfried Archive / Richard Wagner Archive (RWA)

Inventory: Estate of Richard and Cosima Wagner.

Location: Wahnfried, Festspielhaus (festival theatre), Wahnfried.

History: Family archive, transferred in 1976 to the National Archive of the Richard Wagner Foundation, which was founded in 1973.


Richard Wagner Research Centre (RWR)

Inventory: Special library

Location: Wolzogen House, Lisztstr. 2

Administrator: Chancellery of the Reich, the town of Bayreuth

Management: Dr Otto Strobel, municipal librarian and archivist of Haus Wahnfried.
Wolfgang Wagner (in the interim 1952/53)

History: Initiated by Mayors Karl Keller and Dr Otto Schmidt on 16.3.1938 in agreement with Winifred Wagner, who arranged for Hitler to be sent an appropriate memorandum. The Chancellery of the Reich was petitioned by Winifred Wagner in order to save the Research Centre from the influence of Wächtler, the Nazi administrator of the district.
By order of the Führer on 22.5.1938, the opening took place on 13.2.1939.
It was closed in April 1945.
19.06.1952: The Bavarian Ministry of Finance handed the property over to the city council of Bayreuth for the purpose of creating a Richard Wagner Archive.
City council resolution of 11.05.52: Plan to amalgamate RWR and RWM; temporary storage at the Festspielhaus and interim management by Wolfgang Wagner.
03.07.1952: Taking over of collection into RWA at the Festspielhaus by Dr Otto Strobel.
1953: Return of collection and integration thereof into the municipally run RWM.


Richard Wagner Memorial (RWM)

Inventory: estate of C.F. Glasenapp (+ 1915 in Riga), at a later stage the Wolzogen and Bartsch Library, Bales Collection (Bayreuth freeman 1928).

Location: 1924-1927: Glasenapp memorial room with added Richard Wagner Hall, initially located in H. Wallem's private residence Friedrichstr. 19.
1.8.1927: Purchase of RWM by the town of Bayreuth and relocation to the "Ladies' Wing" of the Neues Schloß.
1976: Relocation to the Richard Wagner Museum exhibition at Haus Wahnfried and the National Archive of the Richard Wagner Foundation
Administration: 1976-1992 at Chamberlain House, Wahnfriedstr. 1 (currently the municipal department of cultural affairs).
In the Siegfried Wagner House since 1993.

Management: 1924-1953: Ms Helena Wallem (*28.06.1873 +27.02.1953), scholar and secretary of C.F. Glasenapp, moved to Bayreuth in 1921.

History: In 1934 Helena Wallem - mainly because of Dr Otto Strobel's successful exhibition of "Genie am Werk (a genius at work)", which contains autographic material from the Wahnfried Archive - begins to enforce provisions contained in the will to deny Dr Strobel access to the RWM. This conflict was aggravated by the new production of "Parsifal". Winifred Wagner and Dr Otto Strobel encounter strong opposition by Daniela Thode, Eva Chamberlain and Helena Wallem.
20.1.35: Eva Chamberlain hands over letters and diaries of Cosima to meet the provisions and conditions imposed by the stipulations of the will (Eva Chamberlain passes away on 26.5.1942). Chamberlain legacy (including a library with 12,500 volumes) currently under the administration of and part of the Richard Wagner Museum / National Archive in the 2nd floor of Chamberlain House.
1976: The RWM in the Neues Schloß is dissolved and the contents transferred to the Richard Wagner Museum and library (11,000 volumes), on loan by the city.


Richard Wagner Foundation (RWF)

History: The idea for the foundation was first raised by Siegfried Wagner in 1914 (interview with the München-Augsburger Abendzeitung, quoted in Karbaum, II, p. 57).
Founded in 1973.
After the merger of RWM and RWA (Wahnfried Archive): "National Archive and Research Centre of the Richard Wagner Foundation Bayreuth" Administrator of the Richard Wagner Museum.


Richard Wagner Museum

History: 1973: Haus Wahnfried, which was partially destroyed in the war, is donated to the town of Bayreuth by Winifred and Wolfgang Wagner on establishment of the foundation.
Reconstruction of the house, true to the original, up until 1976 (opening on the 24.7.).
